CHEN GUANNAN, OU JIUN-YOU and WANG QI are all female jewelry designing artists. They are put together in this group exhibition because their art all convey a shared concept: things that are familiar but have never been perceived.   The materials used in their works are not precious stones or rare metals, but rather pearl essence, crystal, iron, shale plus and shadows. These are familiar media but the artists create unusually products of beauty. Yet each of them expresses a different perspective with their works.

Through a self designed machine, CHEN GUANNAN simulates the secretion and parceling process of pearl essence in a oyster. It is a more extreme simulation of artificial production of a pearl. Under this fully mechanized process with human involvement, she redefines the meaning of a pearl. The “pearl jewelry" she makes with this machine can be a Chairman Mao badge, or a shiny pretty spoon, or even anything meaningful to the person who operates the machine. The “mother – son" relationship between an oysters and a pearl seems to be toppled and they are no longer familiar with each other.

OU JIUN-YOU  emphasizes the ceremonial sense. She uses two quite opposite elements, iron and crystal, as major media of the show. The artist said that when the body or the mind appears in life in the form of a crisis, this crisis is then connected to the definition of tribal ceremonies given by modern symbolic anthropologists.

WANG QI expressed her redefinition of different media in her solo exhibition at the Shanghai Gallery 2018 in Munich. At the new Exhibition she will go more boldly in her interpretation of this concept. Her work tells us that no one knows how to define the value of the matters. The values of things that we think we are familiar with are in fact all deliberately attached to them. The fault of information stops us from perceiving the other side of a medium.

The title of the Exhibition is ‘NORNAMENTS’. These works share a profound philosophical thinking about jewelry, elevating jewelry from the superficial ornamental function to a more metaphoric art object. Some works are even uncontrollable in their final forms. I believe this exhibition will bring a very different experience.
